Puss In Boots: The Last Wish arrived in theaters on December 21st, 2022, and hit the nail on the head with the reception. Talk about success! Receiving a 95% from Rotten Tomatoes and earning an average of 93% in audience reviews, the movie continues to earn millions of dollars still a month into its run in the theater. Coming 11 years after the original film was made, the movie brought characters back to life that had not been seen in years. And with it, brought new, equally as fun characters that could be enjoyed by all.

The film itself does not cover any events that happened in the original, but it expands on it, and gives the audience more of a view into the world that Dreamworks has created. Everything in the Puss in Boots/Shrek universe is based off of fairy tales, and this movie introduces new characters and concepts from old fairy tales that many people in the audience will know and remember from their childhood. Goldilocks and the three bears? Wishing upon a star? The fantasy this world brings to life is incredible, and worthy of recognition in itself.

Fun character designs add to the magic of the movie. Who doesn’t enjoy characters with unique traits and fun colors? The main character is a walking cat with a lance, a pair of boots, and a feathered hat. And you also have these new characters that add to the story: a chihuahua-like dog that swears like a sailor at one point in the movie, a villain that wants all of the world’s magic to himself, and a giant wolf that carries two giant sickles.

The Last Wish introduced a new character, named Lobo. Lobo is seemingly the main antagonist of the movie, but it is revealed that he only does his job. He wants Puss in Boots to realize that life is worth living, and to not waste it. His design, being a wolf with bright red eyes and his two thick sickles, was a hit among the audience. The standard set by Dreamworks for their villains is incredible; some say the Kung Fu Panda villains, also created by Dreamworks, are among the greatest in animated film history. With Lobo, the group of villains that remain a fan favorite from Dreamworks continues to grow.

Fear me, if you dare!

Amidst all of the vibrant, fun colors, new amazing characters, and the spectacular animation, though, there lies a deeper meaning. This movie tells us that all of us will face things in life: difficult decisions, fight or flight, or unavoidable events, that we cannot escape from, and we must learn to accept that. Because accepting it is key to living your best, true life. You cannot live out a life of fulfillment if you spend it hiding from things you cannot run from. But, hey, who likes to think about that stuff?

All of this combined leads to one of the greatest animated films released in recent years. What’s even better is that you really feel immersed into the movie. The sound, the colors, and the action all make you feel like a part of this world.

I recommend that if you watch it at home, watch it on a television with a speaker bar, or anywhere with a subwoofer system. As certain scenes played and the tension rose, the theater would shake. You’d feel immersed. And that in itself is an amazing feat accomplished by Dreamworks.

Tickets are still being sold at the AMC theater as of today, and I would recommend you all spend a little bit of money to go view this movie that stems from our childhood. You most likely won’t regret it.
