In the Korean music industry, looking prim and proper is one of the main traits you will see in band members. This can be seen in groups like Girls Generation, IVE, and many others. However, more and more groups are now straying from this “sit still and look pretty” concept.
Some groups that are displaying new concepts include Le Sserafim, LNGSHOT, and most importantly, CORTIS. This new boy group under HYBE Labels, the company that produced BTS and many more, are now going viral across the world for their laidback concept and style.
The group consists of five teenage boys who strive to make music and have fun together. This is something that truly shows through their music and style. CORTIS officially debuted on August 18, 2025, and ever since, they have been growing internationally.
The group had been working together for years to find new ways to build their own style into the K-Pop world that already had so many ideals and rules to follow. By breaking out of the shell that has been forming for decades, CORTIS has been able to gain support from fans all over the world, not only Korea.
In fact, CORTIS is even more popular in the United States and other countries than they are in Korea. The ensemble always returns to L.A to write and produce their own music, producing a larger appreciation for their global roots.
CORTIS’ whole concept is to be rugged and “color outside the lines” compared to the strict regime that the industry follows, due to the main demographic of who is most likely to listen to K-Pop (it’s teens), every little thing CORTIS does from how they dress to how they use slang is becoming just as common as the pretty and proper concept was before.
Not only are CORTIS a staple for individuality and being a different version of what others tell you, they are also their own group’s songwriters and producers. This gives the quintet an expanded freedom and individuality that most groups don’t have.
Because CORTIS has members that are on the younger side, with their youngest being born in 2009, they are proving to their young fan base that they can be the most creative and individual version of themselves without needing to fear criticism of others even at a young age.
Other groups prior to CORTIS didn’t display such a large amount of freedom or youth. By “coloring outside the lines”, CORTIS is bringing a new sub-genre to K-Pop that no one knew they needed until now because concepts like these had never been attempted before.
Once a band is produced that truly makes their fans feel youthful, a new version of themselves based on a sense of individuality and freedom is born, and for Korea CORTIS has become this band.
