Windows
Windows was first developed in November of 1995. Windows was one of the very first operating systems to use a Graphical User Interface or GUI. Windows is often used by the everyday computer user, such as a mom or a teacher as it is designed to be easy to use. If a user wants to use it in a more complicated way, Windows has a middle ground price; Windows 11 Home will cost a user $139 before tax with two options of delivery, a USB to plug into a blank computer or software to download onto a USB.
Linux
Linux is at the core of almost all devices used, from smartphones to cash register systems. Linux is open source and is usually free. Open source software, according to IBM, is “software developed and maintained through open collaboration.” Anyone who wants to use open source software is welcome to. People can also look at, modify, and redistribute open source code if they would like to.
Linux was created in 1991 by a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland named Linus Torvalds. In the very beginning of Linux, the operating system was mainly used by avid users of technology, also known as nerds. It is considered the most secure and reliable operating system.
Linux comes in multiple different distributions or flavors. Linux maintains a list of the most popular distributions on their website, each different distribution is designed for a different purpose. An example of a distribution is Kali Linux. Kali Linux is “an open-source, Debian-based Linux distribution, which allows users to perform advanced penetration testing and security auditing”
macOS
macOS is an operating system that comes exclusively on Apple devices. Apple puts macOS on their laptops and desktops only. Laptop prices can range from $999 to $3,199. macOS is the most recent of the operating systems in this list, coming out in 2000. macOS primarily works in a visual medium, meaning that it usually does not use text based programs.
Apple devices also come with free custom made software. One of these programs is iMovie. iMovie is a video editing software developed by Apple in California. It is used for the hobbyist video creator and is not intended for professional use.
